Writing a blog post and starting a website

glasses, book, education

This is the second post I’m writing. It feels kinda difficult doing this by myself. I am lucky that there is so much free information in the internet. My goal is to be able to write at least 2 post per week. I first started this journey by opening an LLC which I still have not used. If I were to advise another person, I would suggest to open your LLC or business a little later when you have steady income. I have heard that starting a business or blog or even a youtube channel can seem like a really good idea at the beginning. But as time goes by and you don’t see quick results many “could be entrepreneurs” give up too early and miss out on more learning opportunities.

At the beginning I was very excited to be part of the internet and open a youtube channel and create my own website. I have some ideas that are more like undefined dreams. My first step was to make some youtube videos repairing things in the house like a stove and plumbing leaks. It was a huge eye opener. Some of those youtubers make it seem too easy. Others you see and easily think that you could do a better job. But then as you start recording the videos and realize that getting the right angles can be difficult and that the audio is not good enough and most of these things you don’t see as you are recording. You find out after recording and then have to re-record or compromise to uploading lower quality videos than what you would like to put out for people to see.

I thought I could do it all at the same time so that the website and youtube would bounce traffic from each other. Once I started working on the website I had to take a break from youtube. I’m very slow at editing and uploading the videos and I don’t want to let that slow my progress in learning how to create a website.

I decided to continue my progress and create a website. Just coming up with a name and deciding where to host it was taking too much time. I decided to use the initials of what I wanted to do with my webpage so I called it www.rkjlegacy.com since a lot of the other names were taken already. I figured that if I really do well with the site I can always come up with a better name later on and just re-direct traffic to my new URL.

The next problem to tackle would be website hosting. Since most of the information I found on the internet said to use wordpress to create your website I decided to focus on the 3 recommended hosting services by WordPress. Those are BlueHost, DreamHost and SiteGround. From those 3 I decided to go with Dreamhost because of their pricing, great uptime and good reviews. Also it seemed like all 3 were good enough and I was just wasting my time by not deciding which one to pick. Even knowing this I still continued to look up information on all 3 and decided to go with DreamHost.

I’m doing the youtube and website mainly for supplemental income but now I see that I should look at it as a hobby because it will bring me little to no income at the beginning. For now it’s only giving me a lot of learning opportunities that seem like a waste of time when I’m tired or as a good challenge when I’m well rested and positive.

I have tried to start the website on multiple occasions but do to work and family time I’ve pushed it back for around 3 months. I now I could have been practicing my writing and have a few blogs that I could just have copied and paste but I was focused on having the website running first. The newest problem came when all of a sudden I could not access my webpage. It said I needed to confirm that I was the owner of the webpage but no matter what I did I would not receive the confirmation to the e-mail on file. Well it turns out I needed to delete some videos from the cloud because I was out of storage. Once I got the e-mail I realized how frustrating it is for me to make a website.

At first the idea of creating a website was very exciting. But every time I logged in to watch videos of other people telling me how to make a website I felt so lost. I didn’t like the approach of following step by step because it made me feel like I didn’t understand and could only do what I needed by re-playing the video and not because I understood anything.

Currently I learned how to change some text, the background picture and add pages making them selectable from the home page. I selected a pre-built which might be what made me feel so confused to begin with. I do like how nice pre-made pages look but at this time is confusing me more than helping me. It also doesn’t help that some things you have to update from your dashboard and others from elementor or whatever plugin you decide to use.

I was getting tired and needed a break so decided to write my second blog for the website. The website already came with a few blogs so I will have to delete those. I plan to make some reviews with affiliate links. That means I will have to learn the correct way of doing so. For now it seems easier to open a word processor and type away. I will see if I can add some pictures to this blog and maybe an amazon affiliate link to learn a bit more for today.

Remember to keep making progress even if it takes forever and even if you decide it’s not what you want to do with your life at least if you try you will know and not wonder what could have been. Good luck to you.
